Petőfi-Statue
Petőfi square
The connection between Sándor Petőfi (1823-1849), a major Hungarian poet and revolutionaryand Gödöllő is commemorated in Hungarian literature by a beautiful series of poems entitled The Pearls of Love. Petőfi spent notable time in Gödöllő in August-October of 1845. Here, at his friend's, Ferenc Erdélyi's, hous, Petőfi met Berta Mednyánszky, who later became one of Petőfi's muses. Berta accepted Petőfi's love but her father rejected his proposal and The Pearls of Love evokes this love at firts sight, rejection and forbidden love. Another literary connection of Petőfi is his translation in three weeks of George Payne's Robin Hood into Hungarian. The 2,5m tall bronze statue of Petőfi, the work of István Turáni Kovács was erected as a commemoration of the revolutionary who fought and died for the idependence of the Hungarians. The statue was inaugurated in 1955.
