The Saints of Árpád House - carpet pictures in Holy Trinity Church

15 Szent Imre (Saint Emeric) street
Erzsébet Szekeres, textile artist from Gödöllő made the series of 21 carpet pictures showing the 13 members of Árpád House canonised and beautified by the Roman Catholic Church: King Saint Stephen of Hungary, Duke Saint Emeric, Saint Margaret of Scotland, King Saint Ladislaus I of Hungary, Saint Margaret of Hungary, Saint Agnes of Prague, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, Saint Elisabeth of Portugal, and those beutified: Erzsébet Tössi, Jolán and Gertrude. Three archangels belong here: Gabriel, Raphael and Michael and Bishop Saint Martin. The series inaugurated in 2008 also shows a picture of the Hungarian Golgotha and the Holy Mother of Jesus Christ. On the opening ceremony Gergelyné Kovács, Hungarian cultural historian said the following:
"The carpets of Erzsébet Szekeres draw a unique picture of the Árpád House saints reflected through the country, history and belief of Hungarians." King Saint Stephen, founder of the Hungarian State, left us with a lively and comprehensive heritage. His remonstrances are so modern they would make a good constitution for the European Union. He offered his crown to the Holy Virgin and thus the Holy Mary became patron Saint for Hungary.
He was the king who turned Hungarian pagans into followers of Christianity. He was severe yet merciful. He granted mercy to the murderer but sentenced their instigators. He offered Hungary to the Holy Virgin in the conviction that this deed would thoroughly root Christianity in Hungarians, and so it did. The Holy Virgin has a number of names in Hungarian history: she is called Saint Mary, Lady Mary, Mate of the Holy Spirit, Lady dressed in Sun, Mother of Jesus Christ, Our Lady, etc.
The Saints on Erzsébet Szekeres' carpets proclaim the liberation power of the Christian belief. The idea of the carpets was inspired by the commemoration of the Hungarian Millennium (one thousand years since the Hungarian State was declared), 1,000 years of Saint Emeric's and 800 years of Saint Elisabeth's birth. Erzsébet Szekeres thought it was her moral duty to show Europe and the Hungarians the common European Christian ancestors and the Hungarian saints as the blood of sacrality and history.
Opening hours: Mondays to Sundays 5 pm - 6 pm.
